Investigation Details
Government officials disclosed that the UPS cargo plane’s port side wing ignited and an engine separated soon after takeoff from the aviation hub, resulting in the aircraft to fall and burst into a fireball.
The National Transportation Safety Board announced it is investigating the plane’s maintenance history, that was in Texas for maintenance several weeks before the incident.
Flight tracking information revealed the jet was on the tarmac in that location from the start of last month to mid-October.
“We are cognizant that this aircraft was there in San Antonio,” remarked an investigator on later, without a specific time frame. “We will look at each aspect of maintenance that was done, from the repair visit, straight to the date of the flight.”
Retrieval of Vital Evidence
The audio device and information unit were recovered, and the motor was discovered on the airfield.
The units – known as flight recorders – were constructed to withstand collision damage and extreme heat from fires, and they looked to be undamaged when found among the remains. Authorities plan on reviewing data from the recorders.
Aircraft’s final flight details showed an elevation of 475 feet and a velocity of 210 mph before the impact.
Maintenance Background
Per aviation authority documents from that date, a crack on a part in the fuel container needed repairs.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which said it provides aircraft servicing for UPS’s jet and manages a maintenance center in Texas, declined to speak, but stated it would cooperate fully when investigators reached out it.
Services Resume
In the meantime, the facility services continued Wednesday night with its overnight also known as nighttime operation, official the company official stated. The three landing strips at the aviation hub were also open again.
The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the company’s biggest. The hub hires in excess of twenty thousand individuals in the locality, manages numerous flights daily and processes more than 400,000 items per hour.
Local Response
A memorial was held on the evening of 6 November by the local labor union, which supports employees at the Louisville airport, the company’s largest air cargo hub.
The union chapter, which stands for staff, started the gathering with a quiet tribute at the evening hour, the rough hour of the incident two days earlier.
“This tragedy was so sudden, so unexpected,” the leader told the assembly of 200. “No one had a chance to bid farewell to any of those who we have mourned.”
